Jeannette L. Johnson

Dr. Johnson has worked in the fields of mental health, criminal justice, substance abuse and aging as a researcher and scientific administrator for the past 30 years. She has conducted brain-imaging research, studied severe alcoholics, intervention and prevention research with children of alcoholics, and designed HIV/AIDS and hepatitis prevention programs for reservation and urban Indians. She has worked at the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute of Drug Abuse, and the National Institute on Aging. She was appointed Director of the Division of Drug Abuse Evaluation at the University of Maryland in the School of Psychiatry. Later she was appointed a Distinguished Professor at the University of Buffalo, School of Social Work where she was the Director of the Center of Research on Children and Adolescents. Here she studied and developed mentoring programs for elementary school aged children in Buffalo. Dr. Johnson has presented workshops around the world. She is a contributing editor for several journals and the author and co-author of over 150 scientific publications. Dr. Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley and a doctoral degree in psychology from the University of Vermont. She also completed a fellowship in cross-cultural psychology at the University of Hawaii. Her research has centered on the effects of substance abuse in individuals, their families, and the communities in which they live. She is especially noted for her cross-cultural research in resilience.
